by Connie L. Tuttle
This must have been a difficult book to write. The paradoxes of its title suggest the ambivalence underlying this courageous narrative, the pioneering story of one of the first openly lesbian women to brave seminary back in the day when women were excluded from ordination, and lesbians were expected to “lie and deny.”
But then along came Connie Tuttle, a wise-talking, no frills biker who won’t take no for an answer.
This book is my favorite genre, the “How I found my Calling” story, the education of a minister. I was particularly drawn to her struggles in seminary, how she stood up to her denomination, and how she was faithful to her calling.
May she will continue to encourage those marginalized by sexuality, race, gender, age, class or any other category of exclusion—that together we may make our church a welcoming home for all God’s people.
